Track Details

The Routeburn Track in New Zealand is a must-do hike for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers, and is considered one of the country’s premier Great Walks. Spanning 32 kilometers (20 miles) through the Southern Alps, the track takes you through breathtaking alpine landscapes, lush rainforests, and across glistening rivers.

The track typically takes 2-3 days to complete and can be walked in either direction. The most popular starting point is The Divide, near the town of Te Anau, while the other starting point is the Routeburn Shelter, located near Glenorchy.

One of the highlights of the Routeburn Track is the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including Mount Aspiring, which towers over the landscape at 3,033 meters (9,950 feet). The track also passes through the beautiful Routeburn Flats, a wide-open alpine meadow filled with wildflowers in the summer.

Another highlight of the track is the Routeburn Falls, a stunning waterfall that cascades down from a height of 32 meters (105 feet). The falls can be reached via a short side-track and is a must-see for anyone doing the hike.

The track is well-maintained with well-graded tracks, bridges, and huts along the way. There are several huts along the Routeburn Track which provide shelter and basic facilities for hikers. Booking is essential during peak season, especially for those looking to experience one of New Zealand’s Great Walks.
